welcome to sawdust in wood today my name is Chris my name is Colin today we're going to be building a DIY star you're gonna need to cut two angles a 54 degree angle and eighteen degree angle and we're gonna show you how to cut those angles and build a star on this song let's get started so we're gonna build our started pieces of one by two so the first thing I did was I cut ten pieces about a foot long and you need ten pieces to build the star you're gonna need 18 degree angle on this side and a 54 degree on this side so you can cut these pieces whatever size you want depending on how big or small you want your star to be so let's get started and we're gonna cut our 18 degree angle first eighteen degree angle first and we're gonna have to make a jig on our miter saw to cut that because miter saws can't make that cut without a jig on it let's get started alright so we're gonna need a jig on our saw to cut this eighteen degree angle so get a scrap piece of 2×4 whatever you got laying around make sure it's against the fence on your saw lock it down somehow with a clamp and set your saw to 45 degrees and make this cut but you saw back to zero now what you saw is zero if I put a block of wood in it will automatically cut 45-degree angle right here at zero all right so now when my saw set at zero with this jig and I put a piece of wood here this will cut a 45 degree cut so we're gonna count backwards zero is 45 10 is 35 20 is 25 25 is 20 and then 19 and 18 so it'll actually be 27 on your saw such as Salter 27 and that's gonna give you an 18 degree angle I'm gonna make my first cut and that's 18 degree angle so now cut all 10 pieces 18 degrees on one side now you can take your jig off your saw all right so I got my – all set at 36 which is gonna give me a 54 degree angle I'm gonna hold it tight against the fence now all I'm gonna do is cut the rest of the pieces the same way and then we're gonna put our star together here's a star every piece was cut all ten pieces an 18 degree angle on one side and a 54 degree angle on the other side thanks for watching I hope you learned how to build a star today I want to thank everybody for subscribing to my channel I just went over 2,000 subscribers the channel is starting to grow pretty good please post any comments or questions down below there'll be a link to my video advanced miter saw techniques in the description in case you want to see how I read the miter saw in this video you can learn the technique thanks for watching please like and subscribe you
