check it out my 1974 ford bronco i just love the classic lines the squared off body four-wheel drive enough room to fit the entire family in on a cruise i mean look at it i've always wanted one what it's not a that's not a bronco oh it's funny you should say that because my wife had the same reaction when i spent the money we had saved on a ford bronco on this instead ah weird uh well this is in fact a 1966 datsun 1600 roadster jumbo calling it a fire lady this car has a pretty cool story of its own and i'll get to that in a second and by the way it is datsun and not datsun unless you put butter on your mashed potatoes okay so what powers this beast you may be asking there it is 1.6 liters of pure horsepower 96 horsepower anyway before i can let these ponies run i do have just one issue i've got to take care of no battery and there's no battery because the battery was dead so i had to go get a new battery and oddly enough the battery that was in it originally was super tiny almost like it came out like a uh atv and this is the smallest battery i can get at the local auto parts place and now this battery tray doesn't fit it so i'm just going to drill out some holes to make it hold the new battery so when my mom was a kid and she lived in allentown pennsylvania her uncle started one of the first datsun dealerships at least on the east coast of america it might have been the first one on the east coast of america my mom was very close with her uncle and he promised her which got older that when she turned 16 he would give her a datsun roadster for her 16th birthday to to drive as a demonstrator one week before she turned 16 her uncle passed away needless to say she never got her roadster of course she was more worried about losing her uncle than losing the car but still everybody in the family knew this story because whenever i was a kid i loved cars so fast forward over 50 years and we're at the car dealership getting my mom's car serviced out of town and this guy pulls up in this datsun he was there to trade the car in on a new car and long story short i offered him more money than they would on a trade and now one fresh battery and one rain shower later and we're ready to go [Music] [Music] [Applause] so what does 96 horsepower feel like in a 2000 pound go kart it feels a lot faster than it really is and that's kind of what makes this car so cool is that even though it's not fast it feels fast which is good when you're passing cops one time my wife and i took it for a ride and i left the parking lot and i was like oh should i get on it she said yeah just one time sure as i did there was a cop sitting right there and i was like oh no ticket time nah 35 miles an hour we're good so when i bought this car really part of the intent of this was to give my mom basically the opportunity to drive it kind of make it a shared car kind of be my mom's car and she did drive at one time [Music] and as it turns out as you get older um driving little uh tiny little death trap cars becomes less appealing to you so she's only driven at one time but she's ridden with me a couple times the guy i bought the car from put this 5 speed from a datsun 2000 in and i'm glad he did because it's pretty fun to shift redline is at 6000 rpm datsun only made about 55 000 of these from 1965 to 1970. that was that's including the 1500 the 1600 and the 2000 compare that to the mustang which in the same period sold millions and millions of cars so you don't see these like i said before i saw this one i'd never seen one in person and you can't drive this car without people asking you about it or smiling and waving as you pass them so there's some really cool design cues with this car that's why a lot of people when they first see it from a distance they think it's probably an mg or something it has like some british styling to it i guess but then when you take a deeper look it's got some really cool stuff the headlights obviously are the precursor to the 240z with the scooped out look i love that i love how it's rounded yet it's got all these square elements like the the uh the scoop and the hood kind of reminds me of like an austin healey 3000 the the tail lights i've never seen anything that looks like that the way it's squared off and yet has the chrome bezels around the tail lights on top of the squared off it's not a fin but i don't know what you would call it but i love the way that looks that's like that's straight up american looking to me another cool feature you don't see on many cars except for one notable one in particular is that the key is to the left of the steering wheel much like a porsche 911 the switch gear in here the lights fog lights wiper and heater they look like they're out of an airplane it's just man this is such a cool car for what it is i mean it's a very basic car it's not an expensive car not an exotic car but it just has all the really cool stuff about it so there's actually tons of room in this car i am six foot tall 225 pounds and this car is just super comfortable the only thing i will say is that uh the the pedals are a little close so uh yeah i can't fit these size 14s down there so i keep asking myself do you want to keep this car or sell this car i think i want to sell it and then i drive it and then i think maybe not you want to go for a ride so in the end i probably will sell it but not today [Music] you
