Don’t Buy a Backup Generator Until You Watch This!

[Music] ah takes a lot out of me this is my christmas present not really but this is what christmas did to me this terribly disorganized garage it was partly like that before christmas but now it's really terrible i've got some videos coming up soon where i'm going to redo this whole garage this is the one of the next things i've got to work on i've got to organize my tools i'm going to try to find a spot to put all the bicycles my two little girls they have these electric quads that we've got to find a place for and a place for them to charge but what i wanted to do this video on was this duramax xp 13000 eh generator i did a video a while back where i opened this and it was just an unboxing video and showed it run and everything this is a dual fuel generator and what we did a while back we did an addition onto our house for my parents to live in and it's essentially its own house it has its own power and everything and we're going to see if we can run that house off of this generator and we'll see how well it does all right so this is probably as good as spot as any i'm going to try to run this off of our gas line that we have coming out the side of the house this was already here when we bought the house they had intended to put like a generac emergency automatic generator out here and they never did so we already had that hookup so we put a line on there so that i can connect it to this generator and then i've got to tie in to the transfer switch right over here on this side of the house duramax sent this line with the generator it has the regulator on it so this is the line coming from the house very easy to hook up i'm just going to connect their line into the propane inlet [Applause] okay [Applause] basically like connecting your propane grill up so then the next step is i have this i think it's a 20 foot long 50 amp cord to connect to the the transfer switch so i'm going to leave this into the cord here and go over here oddly enough the most difficult part of this whole operation was getting an electrician out here to install the transfer switch we had a storm coming and i knew that i wanted to we weren't going to have to evacuate but it was a tropical storm and i knew that we could lose power and it was it was due in about a week and i had been trying for like two months to get an electrician out here to put a transfer switch in so we finally got someone to come out here they put the wrong switch in they put a 30 amp in which i was able to make work with an adapter um as it turned out the power didn't go out the storm wasn't that bad but they came back afterwards put in this 50 amp uh transfer switch so that's where we are now the end of the hose that the hose the end of the cord that goes into the switch has this spike on it and it lines up and it helps you connect to line up everything nice and easy in the switch nice and easy somehow there we go once you get it in there you feel it you feel it grab and then you just turn it this works out pretty well for us we have the power the main power that comes into the house it comes over here also splits off into this box and i'm not an electrician so if i say something wrong you know forgive me but it comes off over here [Music] and here we have the breaker for our deep well the breaker for the addition for my parents place and this is the breaker for the transfer switch for the generator so the main thing you always have to remember is i know they have some lockout switches to prevent you from doing this you always have to be careful and make sure that you turn off your main power because if you don't in a in a power outage situation a lineman could be working and the power when when they're working could come through the generator go back through the lines and shock someone so you always have to make sure you turn off your main breaker so i'm going to turn off the main breaker leave the house breaker on and the well breaker on and then i'll turn on the generator breaker after i turn the generator on [Applause] well i can see that the porch lights are on so i'll take that as a good sign okay so we've got power i did turn the air conditioner here near 83 i did turn the air conditioner off before i did this test just because i didn't want to uh i don't know how how harsh how bad that is for the air conditioner units to just be shut off like that so i went ahead and cut it off before doing this test if i didn't mention it before i don't know if this was about a thousand it's about 900 square feet for this edition and it's a it's just a basically a guest cottage for my parents that is attached through the garage to our house but they have a two ton air conditioner in here a dishwasher full-size refrigerator oven washer dryer bathroom everything they have a there's a grinder pump because of where we live that has to operate so there's quite a bit of draw on here and this generator powers everything i'm going to turn the air conditioner back on real quick just so we can see that work so take it just a second because anytime the system has been shut down there's like a reboot period before it'll cut back on but we'll give that just a few minutes so while i was filming everything else running in the house the air conditioner kicked on and i didn't have it rolling but once it kicked on the lights flickered and you could hear the generator really kick in good out there but it's blowing ice cold air now so this 13 000 watt i mean i know that's not a small generator but this is uh this is a 1400 generator okay so it doesn't have an automatic uh switch for when the power goes out um but it was fourteen hundred dollars and it can essentially power a whole house the reason we only did this part of the house was because we have an emergency we'll just leave the main house and we'll come over here and make mom and dad feed us so that's what our plan is i'll put a link for this uh generator down below and if it's something you're interested in you might want to check it out a lot cheaper than going with an 8 to 15 000 built-in generator i mean those have their purposes and those would be nice to have but if you're trying to save money and you just you know want to be comfortable when your power goes out i think this generator is great
